A forum on Creating Welcoming Schools for Immigrant Families will be held at the Athens Clarke County Public Library (2025 Baxter St, Athens, GA 30606) from 10am-2pm on Saturday, September 9th, 2017. This collaborative event, organized by local educators, is sponsored by the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition (AIRC) and Georgia Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (GATESOL).
This forum is free and open to the public and the target audience is any person in education who works with immigrant students and their families in Clarke and surrounding counties. This event will bring together professionals across fields to inform participants on the following topics: a) the rights of immigrant students and their families, b) how to respond to student and family concerns, and c) curriculum and practices to celebrate, support, and engage our most vulnerable immigrant student populations.
By creating an awareness of the issues that immigrant students and families face, specifically those related to education, school districts will be better equipped to meet their needs. At the forum, participants will receive practical resources to make a positive impact in their classrooms and schools.
The forum will include both plenary sessions for all participants to attend and breakout sessions based on participant interest.
The following sessions will be offered:
Creating Welcoming Classrooms and Schools
Creating School Safety Teams for Immigrant Families
Difficult Conversations in the Classroom
Facts & Myths about Immigration
Family Outreach and Support
