Immigration Nation Community Workshop

Oconee United Methodist Church: 717 Oconee St, Athens, GA 30605. 7:30 p.m.

Come learn from an immigration attorney and former client turned advocate about the basics of immigration law and how to be an ally for your immigrant communities. Topics include a conversation about sanctuary spaces, how to intervene when witnessing a hate crime, how to protest deportations and raids, and a Q and A session. This is a terrific opportunity for us to learn how to be effective allies, and comes at the perfect time for us.

Immigration Nation is the brainchild of two friends, MartinaCarrillo and Lauren Burke. We met in 2010 when Martina, who is originally from Mexico, was in high school and Lauren was working as an attorney at a non profit in New York City. Together we worked on Martina’s case and eventually, with two other young women, we founded the immigrant focused non profit, Atlas: DIY. In the fall of 2016 loaded up a camper van and went on the road to provide free, on-demand legal services for immigrants and their communities across theU.S. From individual meetings with immigrants unable to afford or access a lawyer, to trainings and know your rights sessions in schools and churches, to educating concerned citizens on how to advocate for their immigrant neighbors, we operate a mobile immigration clinic, providing free, on-demand services for immigrants and their communit ies across the United States.
